Lesson learned #5- I have to go to the grocery store again?

Ok ladies, you have got to help me out on this one. Every time I turn around, I have to go to the grocery store again! What am I doing wrong? I mean, for those of you who know Greg and I, you know we like to eat :) But seriously...this is out of control.

Since I moved to Alabama with Greg we have made a weekly "major" shopping trip. These weekly trips consist of stocking up on fresh veggies, more frozen meats, milk, juice, etc. Each week this trip ends up costing about $100. What in the heck?! On top of that, I almost always end up making a couple runs to the store in the middle of the week because we ran out of coffee creamer, or eggs, or oops I forgot to buy spaghetti noodles.

Please! Help a lady out! How can I reduce the amount of trips to the grocery store and also reduce the amount of money spent?! Even shopping tax free at the commissary is going to make us broke at this point!

xoxo

  1. girllll I feel you. This is a link to one of my favorite food bloggers about how she plans her week. This should help. I definitely plan ahead and I think that saves some money if you stick to a list. http://annies-eats.com/2010/06/16/menu-planning-tips-and-tricks/

  2. Alright, so this definitely takes some getting used to, but I've started couponing to save us some money. Make sure you get coupons from the Sunday paper (when you're back here, we can do it together) which is even sold at the dollar store! Clip all the coupons (even the ones you don't think you'll use because sometimes items will be FREE!), then collect the weekly ads. I usually shop Harris Teeter, Walgreens, Kroger, Rite Aid, and sometimes Target. At Rite Aid and Walgreens, I get all of our personal care needs and diapers (when that time comes, lol) and you can use the coupons you get from the paper as well as the store coupons in the Ad...thus making some items EXTREMEMLY cheap. I will stock up on items when they are really cheap (like toothpaste) and then I have plenty when I run out....thus eliminating extra trips to the store. Also, I only get items that are really, really good deals from the grocery store. For example, last week at Kroger they had Kraft cheese for $.99 and I probably bought 6 packs of sliced cheese, 3 blocks of pepper jack, and 2 bags of shredded. We're set on cheese for awhile, and it may seem silly at the time, but it normally costs almost $4 for the same pack of cheese. I've gotten it down to where I spend only $100 on groceries every 2 weeks (plus the cost of diapers). It's also kind of fun to figure out how much you can save...it's a fun little challenge! Oh, yeah, be sure to check out www.southernsavers.com because they have great tips!
